Heir to the Royal Garden o Medicinal Plants , created in 1635 under Louis xiii, the museum was opened on 10th June 1793. One year later, a zoo was built with animals from royal estates and from fairgrounds. After 350 historic years, the museum has become an establishment attracting scientific, cultural and pedagogic visits.
The museum comprises a collection of galeries : The palentology gallery with its collection of dinasaur skeletons, the Anatomy Gallery dedicated to the remains of vertebrates, the Minerology Gallery with its fine samples of minerals and giant crystals, the Paleobotanic Gallery retraces the history of vegetation since its appearance on earth whilst theEnotomomlogy Gallery is dedicated to insects. The large Evolution Gallery, which opened its doors to the public in 1994 is a renovated area. It is the principal room in the building. The issue concerning the evolution of species, the rapport between man and nature has been set up here in a highly modern way. The jardin des plantes also allows the visitor to walk through the botanic school, the Alpine garden , the rose garden, the maze and the Iris garden.
