 The very beautiful Petit Palais was built as a universal exhibition centre in 1900 by Charles Girault. It hosts important collections which give a large idea of artistic creations since antiquity until the end of the last century.
There are ancient artefacts due to the shrewdness of the Dutruit brothers who, in 1902, bequeathed their rich collection of antiques and mediaeval objects to the centre as well as their precious possessions dating back to the French and Italian Renaissance and their famous Flemish and Dutch paintings.
The collection was completed with the paintings, sculptures, tapestries and objets d’art from the xviii century due to the Tuck donation. The museum possesses a remarkable amount of work dating back to the xix century as a result of purchases by the city of Paris during the course of the century (Dalou Studio) but also due to crucial donations of Courbet, Carpeaux, Carriés and Cézanne. It has since been enrichened by the judiciously political acquisition of works by Delacroix, Ingres and Chassérian The objects on display reflect the principal trend of the century. Work from the 1900’s is also on display with such examples as the pieces of stoneware and Gallé glasses. During the beginning of 2001 renovation work will be carried out so as to modernise Le Petit Palais.
