This square is essentially famous for its column which was erected in 1833 by Alavoine as a tribute to those citizens who fought to defend public liberties. It rests on a base within which the remains of more than 500 victims of the revolutions of 1830 and 1848 can be found. At the top of the column stands the Liberty Genious, gilded in bronze, it is the work of Dumont.
