In 1613 , after having acquired the hotel from François de Luxembourg, Queen Marie de Médicis charged Salomon de Brosse with the task of building a beautiful residence to be called le Palais Pitti after her native Florence.
An ambitious project to expand the Palace began in 1835 by the architect A de Gissors who erected a new façade to the Jardin de Luxembourg. The interior decor of the Palace comprises a Neogothic style. The library ceiling was designed by Delacroix and the medallions were painted by Van Thulden whilst the ceiling paintings were carried out by Jean Monnier.
