This site covers a surface area of 25 hectares and can be found between the Louvre Carrousel and Place de la Concorde, rue de Rivoli and the banks of the Seine. Catherine de Médicis ordered the construction of the monument. However, one can trace the origins of the gardens back to 1664.
The two terraces which border the north and south of this monument form two wide meandering paths which lead to the front of Place de la Concorde. The northern terrasse, situated on the same side as the Jeu de Paume National Gallery dominates the terasse des Feuilletons. It is here that stands « la salle du Manège » where the National Assembly was welcomed in 1789 followed by other revolutionary assemblies.
The sculptured ornaments found in the gardens are incredibly varied including work by Marly, Van Cleve, Coustou and Le Paultre.
Here you can also find the Orangerie Museum and the Jeu de Paume National Gallery.
This prestigious area is also a playing place for children. You can also find garden workshops, painting, sculpture, modelling , an old fashioned merry-goround made of wood . You also have the opportunity to go on a donkey ride or you can hire a mini sailing boat.
Every year from, 21st June to 25th August, there is a fair here with a big wheel which overlooks and dominates the rue de Rivoli.
